Dry ice is the solid form of co2. It is used primarily as a cooling agent. Its advantages include lower temperature than that of water ice and not leaving any residue (other than frost from moisture in the atmosphere). It is useful for sub zero cooling when mechanical cooling is not available or cost effective.
Dry ice sublimates at at a temperature of 194.65 K (−78.5 °C; −109.3 °F), at Earths atmospheric pressure. This severe cold makes the solid co2 dangerous to handle without protection due to the potential of burns being caused by freezing (frostbite). dry ice is generally non-toxic
